Dear Mr. President,

It seems like an appropriate time to wish you a Happy Guy Fawkes Day.  This IS November 5th and, here in the US, there are thousands of your compatriots “occupying” several parks in cities across the nation, many wearing Guy Fawkes masks.  You have welcomed their protests warmly and have made no effort to curb their violence.  I take it then that you feel some camaraderie with Mr. Fawkes.

I’ve always wondered why anyone would wish someone a “Happy Guy Fawkes Day” because Mr. Fawkes, as you may know, was the one left holding the bag, or in this case  the 36 barrels of gun powder, when he was found just hours prior to his attempt to blow up the House of Lords and his king, King James I.  For his efforts he was found guilty of High Treason and sentenced to being Hanged, Drawn and Quartered. Unfortunately during his execution on January 31st, 1606, Mr. Fawkes, being the treasonous dog and coward that he was jumped from the scaffold, hanging himself and thus avoiding the mutilation to follow. Assassins deserve no less, don’t you think?

Of course, it could be argued that it’s right to take down tyrants and others who abuse high office.  I imagine that is what you told yourself to rationalize your illegal campaign to take out a foreign leader in a country that had not committed an act of aggression toward us in quite some time.  How ironic that in pursuing the assassination of other leaders and US citizens you fail to see your own abuse of high office leaving you more and more open to being labelled a tyrant.

Now I wouldn’t want you to think that I am suggesting you suffer the same fate as that of Mr. Qaddafi, I most certainly do not.  I hope that you will live a long and prosperous life.  Indeed, I pray for your welfare as well I ought.  I know that which you seem to have missed; that it is God, who alone rules the Universe, who sets anyone to high office according to His perfect wisdom and Almighty providence (Romans 13:1-2; Psalm 75:4-7).  Though you are a wicked, proud and profligate man, I confess that God is both most wise and most good in appointing you to the office of the President of the United States.

This may be something of surprise to you since you counted on the invisible hand of “friends” in high places and your own charisma to put you into office.  No doubt those considerations appeared to play a part but in reality it was “friends” in spiritual places and ultimately God Himself that was the actual cause for your placement.  It is for this reason that whoever would deign to overthrow our government or act against your person should suffer the most severe of punishments.  It is they who should suffer the fate of Mr. Fawkes.

For this reason I must admit some confusion and sorrow about why you embrace anarchists, hoodlums, communists, socialists, jihadists, and criminals.  I suppose you think that in the midst of chaos, you might be able to grab even more power and another 4 or more years in office.  Those occupiers might be useful idiots now, but you might become their useful idiot in the commotion.  One should not forgot those sad cases in history where the player becomes the played as happened to Leon Trotsky among others.

That being said, it is God, not political intrigue, that determines who attains what office.  But it is the office holder who will stand before God on judgment day to account not only for their own lives, but also for their effect on the millions of lives given into their care.

As I wrote above, it is my desire for you to live a long and prosperous life.  However, that won’t be much comfort if at death you are cast into everlasting darkness and fiery doom.  This is the destination of all who are unrepentant, presidents and paupers alike.  I urge you, and will pray for you, to repent of your shrewd ways and seek office honestly and discharge it faithfully to the God who made you and appointed you to the Presidency.  It is a good and commendable service, given directly to God, to punish evil and reward righteousness.  It would be wonderful for you to serve God in this way.

May history be able to remember you as the transgressor who repented and led our country into  widespread and fruitful repentance and a return to the true worship of God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Yours Faithfully,

The Sojourner

Dear Mr Camping,

I am writing to you at about 3:00 PM (International Dateline Time) on May 21, 2011.  This is the day (at least in that time zone) that you claim is judgement day.  It is not good that the aged should lack wisdom, nor is it wise for the young to harshly rebuke the aged, wise or not.  You rank higher than I in the providence of God as you are nearly 40 years my senior.

That being said, it was not wise for you to set a date for events that are known only to God the Father as a reminder of his Sovereign good pleasure and His sole claim to all authority.  I shudder when I look at the home page for Family Radio where the arrogant claim is made that your pronouncement of Judgement Day on May 21st, 2011 is guaranteed by the Bible.

The Family Radio Website on May 20, 2011

Does the Bible Really Guarantee This?

How many enemies of God you have given occasion for blasphemy and how many foolish people whom you will bewilder when tomorrow comes and goes like any other day.  Surely you will go to your grave a broken man and for that I mourn.

I will not be a blasphemer like the worldling and “party” this weekend.  Nor will I scoff since the righteous do not sit in the seat of scoffers.  But do you not understand the arrogance and pride of thinking that God has revealed some secret knowledge to you which has not been given to His apostles, His evangelists, His teachers or His pastors for 2000 years?  And do you think that you could possibly be a friend of the Bridegroom while casting odium upon the Bride?  Certainly the church needs often to be reformed and called back to her first love.  But to consider the whole church, everywhere, to be apostate and to counsel God’s people to remove themselves from faithful shepherds is inexcusable.  This has been the surest indication of your pride these many years.

Sir, it is my hope that you will repent of this error and be corrected.  It is also not God’s desire that you should refuse any longer to come under the authority of properly ordained elders.  Join a good church in the Reformed faith and spend the last few years of your life learning what God’s word REALLY says.  God forgives sinners and saves them, even during the twilight of life.

As for those who have believed this man, you should also join good, gospel preaching churches and humbly receive the Word that will save your soul.  And to those mockers, God-haters, and foolish people, I ask you, if you died on May 21, 2011 (or any other day) do you really believe that you will stand in the judgement.  As it is written in the Letter to the Hebrews, chapter 9 and verse 27 that it is appointed once for man to die and after that comes judgement.  This is not the message of a proud old fool but of the everlasting and eternal God.

Jesus Christ will soon return with all His holy angels in flaming fire.  When is not for us to know.  But when it happens there will be none spared but those who place their faith in Jesus Christ who died to save us from the sure wrath of God. Flee to Him and not to silly old men who try to play God.

Yours Most Sincerely In Christ,

The Sojourner

A Letter to the Whole World

Posted: July 3, 2010 in The World

Dear World,
As you may have noticed, this world is in pretty bad shape and it seems we are on the brink of a very dark time.  What you may not know, or at least you have definitely chosen to forget, is that you were created by the LORD God.  The Heavens and the Earth, the sea and all that is in them, visible and invisible, have been made by God for His good pleasure and glory.  Fortunately for you, He considers the welfare of His creatures, the sustainment of His creation, and especially the salvation, sanctification and glorification of His Elect, as inextricably tied to both His glory and His pleasure.  To memorialize this forever in the clearest and most durable terms, He has covenanted both within Himself (He is Father, Son and Holy Spirit, ever in covenant bond) and with His creation to bring forth a people for His own pleasure and a renewed and everlasting creation to pour forth His glory.

This same God, who in times past spoke to the fathers in many portions and in many ways, has in these last times, spoken to us in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.  It is to Him, through Him,and for Him that we have our being.  And whether you like it or not, one day each of you will bow the knee and confess that Jesus is Lord of all to the glory of God the Father.

As one of God’s elect, to whom unimaginable and countless mercies have been shown, I thought it good to write to you and tell you about this God.  This is both to His glory and your eternal benefit.  For a time is coming when God shall bring an end to this age, and all shall stand before Him in judgement.  We shall all (myself included) be found not only wanting, but life-long enemies of our Creator; rebellious and unfaithful children of our God.  If we are judged by the course of our own lives and the content of our character we are lost.  Indeed from birth we have all been accounted sinners and enemies in the sight of this Holy God.  The righteous wrath of God is justly against us and there will be no escape.  That is, if we stand before God according to our lives.

But this God, desiring to show mercy, goodwill and love towards the whole world, has given to us a savior.  He Himself came down from heaven, was incarnated, took the form of the lowliest of servants, and lived a life of perfect obedience.  Finally, He was unjustly accused of blasphemy and executed by crucifixion.  As the prophet Isaiah put it, he was counted with the transgressors.  That would be you and me.  This was done according to the will of Him who desired to show mercy to the sinner so that whosoever believes in Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, might not perish in judgment but be granted the right to become children of God, to be given eternal life, and have hope of everlasting reward.  God the Son has paid the debt owed for our rebellion.

And so, having but a few moments to write to you, I leave with you an exhortation to flee the wrath of God to come, to repent of your innumerable sins, and to cling to Christ.  Only Christ’s perfect obedience can stand the scrutiny of God’s infinite holiness and righteousness.  And only to those who are accounted as perfect for Christ’s sake through faith will stand in the judgement that is more rapidly drawing near.

Yours most sincerely in Christ,

The Sojourner
